                                               Christmas Eve Service of Lessons and Carols

  As you came in the stillness of night, God, enter our lives this night. Fill us with the light of Christ,
    that we may clearly recognize the way to go, the truth to speak, and the life to live. As we peer
               into the face of the child of Bethlehem, may we discover anew a world in need
                                                      of your love and redeeming grace. Amen.

Prelude                      Variations on “Love Came Down at Christmas,” no. 4, 6, 8.            David N. Johnson

                                                           Two Carols for Brass arr. Michel Rondeau
                            In Dulci Jubilo (German Carol)                                                                                           (b. 1948)
                            Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly (Welsh Carol)
                                                 Festival Brass; Dr. Michelle Louer, conductor

                                                                       Comfort, Comfort Ye My People                            arr. David Ashley White
                                              Sanctuary Choir; Dr. Michelle Louer, conductor                                     (b. 1944)

        Comfort, comfort ye my people,
        speak ye peace, thus saith our God;
        comfort those who sit in darknes
        mourning ‘neath their sorrows’ load.
        Speak ye to Jerusalem
        of the peace that waits for them;
        tell her that her sins I cover,
        and her warfare now is over.

        Hark, the voice of one that crieth
        in the desert far and near,
        calling us to new repentence
        since the kingdom now is here.
        O that warning cry obey!
        Now prepare for God away;
        let the valleys rise to meet him
        and the hills bow down to greet him.

        Make ye straight what long was crooked,
        make the rougher places plain;
        let your hearts be true and humble,
        as befits his holy reign.
        For the glory of the Lord
        now o’er earth is shed abroad;
        and all flesh shall see the token
        that the word is never broken.

                          Text: Isaiah 40:1-5; vers. Johann G. Olearious, 1671, tr. Catherine Winkworth, 1863, alt.

                                                                       Wexford Carol (English Carol)                                         arr. Richard Price
                                                                               Festival Brass

                                                                                           O Holy Night                                                          Adolphe Adam

        1. O holy night, the stars are brightly shining,
            It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth;
            Long lay the world in sin and error pining,
            ‘Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth.
            A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
            For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn;

                  Chorus
                  Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices!
                  O night divine! O night when Christ was born.
                  O night, O holy night, O night divine.

        2. Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming;
            With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand:
            So, led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,
            Here come the wise men from Orient land,
            The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger,
            In all our trials born to be our friend;

                  Chorus
                  He knows our need, To our weakness no stranger!
                  Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!
                  Behold your King! your King! before him bend!

                          Text: Oliver Ditson, 1875

* Hymn #44                                              O Little Town of Bethlehem                                                           ST. LOUIS

        O little town of Bethlehem,
        How still we see thee lie!
        Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
        The silent stars go by.
        Yet in thy dark streets shineth
        The everlasting light;
        The hopes and fears of all the years
        Are met in thee tonight.

        For Christ is born of Mary;
        And gathered all above.
        While mortals sleep, the angels keep
        Their watch of wondering love.
        O morning stars, together
        Proclaim the holy birth!
        And praises sing to God the King,
        And peace to all the earth.

        How silently, how silently,
        The wonderous gift is given!
        So God imparts to human hearts
        The blessings of His heaven.
        No ear may hear His coming,
        But in this world of sin,
        Where meek souls will receive Him, still
        The dear Christ enters in.

        O holy Child of Bethlehem,
        Descend to us, we pray;
        Cast out our sin and enter in,
        Be born in us today.
        We hear the Christmas angels
        The great glad tidings tell;
        O come to us, abide with us,
        Our Lord, Emmanuel!

Offertory                                                      A Christmas Blessing                                                 Phillip Stopford
                                                                                                                                                                              (b. 1977)

        May the joy of the angels,

        Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
        The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
        The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay,
        The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

        The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,
        But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
        I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky,
        And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

        Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
        Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
        Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
        And fit us for Heaven to live with Thee there.

* Hymn of Response #40                       Joy to the World!                                                                     ANTIOCH

        Joy to the world! the Lord is come:
        Let earth receive her King;
        Let every heart prepare Him room,
        And heaven and nature sing,
        And heaven and nature sing,
        And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

        Joy to the world! the Savior reigns:
        Let us our songs employ;
        While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
        Repeat the sounding joy,
        Repeat the sounding joy,
        Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

        No more let sins and sorrows grow,
        Nor thorns infest the ground;
        He comes to make His blessings flow
        Far as the curse is found,
        Far as the curse is found,
        Far as, far as the curse is found.

        He rules the world with truth and grace,

        The glories of His righteousness,
        And wonders of His love,
        And wonders of His love,
        And wonders, wonders of His love.
