HYMN Christ, When for Us You Were Baptized was penned by Episcopal priest F. Bland Tucker when he was well into his 80s. Bland never intended to write hymns, but was inspired to do so when appointed to the committee that prepared The Hymnal 1940 [Episcopal]. His greatest talent was his ability to adapt older hymns where original lines were obsolete or sexist for twentieth century worshipers. This hymn, included in a variety of current hymnals, is written specifically to relate the significance of Jesus’ baptism in relation to the sacrament of baptism for all believers.
