PLEIN AIR PAINT OUT

September 15, 8 AM – 4 PM

The Fine Arts Advisory Team invites artists of all ages, talents, and mediums to participate in a special Plein Air art event on the grounds of Second Presbyterian Church on Sunday, September 15, weather permitting. This non-juried event is free and open to all. Pre-registration with signed participation releases are required and will be provided upon registration. Minors must have parental consent.

"En plein air” is a French term that translates literally as "in the open air," and this type of artwork is completed on location, while outdoors. Registered participants may check in anytime between 8 AM and 11:30 AM and may remain on the grounds until 4 PM. Artists will have an opportunity to display their art in a special exhibition.

Registration Deadline: Monday, September 9 at 12 PM

Questions? Please contact Carol Baker at cbaker@SecondChurch.org or call 317-253-6461 x356.

Plan to stay the whole day, worship with Second, and enjoy the church picnic between paintings, sketchings, etc! Church services are at 8:15 AM, 10 AM, and 11:15 AM. Details and tickets for the Church Picnic are available here.

MORE DETAILS:

On Sunday, September 15, check-in is between 8 AM and 11:30 AM. At check-in, participants will receive a map outlining locations on the Second Presbyterian grounds which may offer excellent views of the church building architecture, the vegetable gardens, labyrinth, picnic shelter, and more.

  • Safety and accessibility are important. Participants may choose where to set-up the day-of but must be located in a safe location that does not impede accessibility of members and guests. Volunteers will monitor the grounds to ensure safety.
  • Artists must bring everything they need for a comfortable, successful plein air art experience, including a bag to collect garbage.

Are you new to Plein Air Painting? Here’s a guide for beginners as reference, but participation accessories can be as easy as a camp chair or blanket and sketch pad and pencil.

  • The event is from 8 AM to 4 PM. You can stay as long or as short as you’d like, but the event ends at 4 PM. Participants must clean up and vacate the grounds by 4:30 PM. When finished, artists are invited to display their finished work, if they choose.
  • Usually, plein air paint outs require artists to complete the work by the end of the event; however, for this event, artists may take their work home to complete and return on Saturday, September 21 for a special exhibition. The piece must be prepared for hanging. (Reference: Preparing Art for Hanging in McFarland Hall.)
