Monday Memo - October 5, 2020

Hello Second Family,

In the wilderness, in the most trying times of our own spiritual journeys, we can recall God’s providence and claim God’s abundance. In these moments, we trust the promise that the table of our Lord Jesus Christ is the largest table in all of creation – with sustenance, rest, and enough for all. We accept the invitation to come, to take, to eat, and to share.

In worship yesterday we reflected on the story of the Israelites in Exodus 16, a powerful story of God’s provision in the wilderness. A story with rushing currents, raging rapids, unrest, doubt, and weariness. Their story, much like our own, offers the comfort in the conviction that God’s providence is not dependent on the consistency of our faith. For soaring faith – even our own – can come crashing down in the turmoil of life and the concerns we bear. But remember: the abundance of God perseveres. The promise of manna – daily bread – sustains.

I challenge you to seek God’s abundance. In the ways you engage with the life of this church, and the life of our community here and around the world this week, remember that God’s people are called to believe in the abundance of God enough to share it. Remember that the myth of scarcity, the lies of Pharaoh, must be undermined by a community of generosity. We are called to offer God’s abundance to one another as followers of Jesus Christ.

May we seek the abundance of God in these weighty days.

With peace and grace,
Chris

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY

Yesterday we celebrated World Communion Sunday with Christians all over the world. Joined with siblings-in-Christ around the Lord’s table, no matter our distance, we are invited to “taste and see” God's goodness as we are woven together, near and far, into the body of Christ. Watch this video with Rev. Mike Samson, Rev. Brian Shivers, and Rev. Madison VanVeelen as they offer the promise of Christ’s abiding love. And listen again to the children of Second as they sing Come All You People – a beautiful witness of Christ’s invitation to all!

FAITHFUL POLITICS: CONVERSATIONS WITH REV. CHRIS HENRY
What is the call of the church, and the role of Christian faith, in such a time as this?

Building on our Faithful Politics series and the sermons preached on September 20 and 27, Rev. Chris Henry will lead two evening sessions reflecting on how we might faithfully navigate this election season as followers of Jesus Christ who belong to one another. This will be an in-person event held at Second – Saturday, October 17 and Saturday, October 24 – registration is now open. We invite you to come with open hearts and minds, seeking both the challenge and the blessing of the Spirit’s presence among us!
