To God Be the Glory written by the prolific gospel hymn writer Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915), gained great popularity after 1954 through its use in the Billy Graham crusades. Crosby articulates the understanding that the primary element in the Christian faith is not a great imperative, that is to say, something we should do for God. Rather, it is a great indicative, something God has done for us. God so loved the world that he gave us his Son to make atonement for our sin. All who believe in Christ will receive pardon, will rejoice now and through all eternity because of the “great things he has done.”
