HYMN #555 Now Thank We All Our God was written during the Thirty Years’ War, circa 1636, by Martin Rinkart, a German Lutheran pastor. Known as the national “Te Deum” of Germany, this hymn has been sung on many occasions of national rejoicing, and is second only to “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” in its widespread use in Germany. Rinkart composed the first two stanzas as a grace to be sung before meals at his family table. Stanza 3 is a grand doxology of praise to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
