HYMN #10 On Jordan’s Bank the Baptist’s Cry - originally written in Latin by Charles Coffin (1676-1749) appearing in the Paris Breviary, a collection of Office Services for the Catholic church. Coffin taught and was principal of the then-prominent Beauvais College in Paris. This powerful Advent hymn is based on Matthew 3:1-3 where John the Baptist proclaimed the baptism of repentance and pointed to the One greater than he,to quote the hymn, “whose advent has our freedom won” and who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.
