HYMN #316 Breathe on Me, Breath of God was written by Oxford Classic Professor Edwin Hatch. Hatch was also renowned as a theologian and wrote several collections of hymns and religious poetry. The origins of this particular hymn suggest he intended it for ordination. It is based on John 20:22: “When [Jesus] had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. The text is a prayer for renewal by God’s Spirit, a renewal that is to be expressed in a life of love, in purity of heart and will and in an intimacy with God that heralds the perfection of eternal life.
